Stanford Women’s Rowing – Fifth Straight Conference Title
The #2 Stanford Women carried their season momentum straight through the ACC Championships, winning a fifth consecutive conference title and sweeping all five grand finals at Lake Wheeler. Stanford finished with 132 points, ahead of #8 Virginia and #6 Cal, and in the process became the first ACC team since Virginia in 2015-16 to sweep all championship races in back-to-back seasons. The result extended a long run of conference success and, more importantly, felt like a team peaking at the right time as the NCAA Championships approach.
Friday had already set the tone. Stanford won all five preliminary heats, and the 1V4 set an ACC Championship record at 6:52.47. Then on Saturday, the Cardinal finished the job in emphatic fashion. The 3V8 started the morning with a nearly nine-second win and closed out the season in dominant style, a fitting finish for a group whose development and senior leadership stood out all spring. The 2V4 again showed the depth of the fours group, and the 1V4 backed up its record-setting heat with another decisive victory. In the eights, the 2V8 won by open water, and the 1V8 sealed the sweep with a 5.15-second margin over Virginia.
There were also a number of details that made the weekend feel especially strong. The ACC field itself looked deep, with Virginia in particular showing the kind of speed that should translate into NCAA competition. Stanford’s 2V4 was, on time, the second-fastest four on the water in both the heat and the final, which says a great deal about the strength of the entire fours group. Sophomore Julia Doss also stroked the 2V8 on a broken ankle and, by all indications, rowed a terrific race. And across the lineup, senior leadership was clearly part of what helped the team deliver such a complete weekend.
The postseason awards reinforced that. Stanford’s varsity eight was named ACC Crew of the Year, and Derek Byrnes was named ACC Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Stanford is now ranked No. 2 in the coaches’ poll, and that rise feels well earned. The speed has been there all spring, but the ACC weekend suggested the Cardinal are sharpening at exactly the right time as they head to Lake Lanier to defend their NCAA title.
