Stanford Men’s Rowing – Third at MPSF Championships
The #5 Stanford Men placed third in all three grand finals at the MPSF Championship on Lake Natoma, continuing a season that has steadily moved the program forward. Stanford’s 1V8 clocked 5:47.427, the 2V8 went 5:52.411, and the 3V8 finished in 6:06.252. The result extended Stanford’s streak of third-place finishes in a conference 1V8 grand final to 12 straight seasons, but this year’s edition carried a little more intrigue because the broader body of work suggests the Cardinal may still have room to push into the IRA Grand Final conversation, particularly with two top athletes still out of the upper boats and expected to return soon. Producing these results while short-handed and still the youngest team on average is an encouraging sign for the future.
The margins are still there, but they are also informative. Stanford was 4.964 seconds off #2 Cal and 6.951 behind #1 Washington in the 1V8, and just over five seconds back of Cal in the 2V8. The 3V8 continues to be a rebuilding project, but simply racing a third varsity boat this season for the first time since 2019 is itself a marker of program progress, especially with athletes moving up to cover for the missing rowers in the 1V8 and 2V8.
The bigger picture for the men remains encouraging. Stanford’s CMax position is right around No. 5, which lines up with the season’s results, and the races against Cal and Washington still give real reason to believe an IRA Grand Final berth is achievable. Nothing will be handed to this group, but the trend line is good, both in this season and in year-over-year IRA progress. With the return of all oarsmen, some strong practices, and (finally) a closer IRA at Natoma without flights or time-zone changes, we’re very optimistic to see what might be possible.
