Women’s Sprints – Lightweight Cardinal Surpass Expectations in Historic Debut

For the first time ever, #6 Stanford’s Lightweight Women made the cross-country trip to the Women’s Sprints — and the move paid off. With calm weather finally prevailing after a turbulent Saturday, the Cardinal took advantage of the opportunity to test themselves against the full national field, many of whom they had already seen earlier in the season.

Assigned outside lanes as newcomers (typically not favored unless conditions are calm), Stanford’s boats rose above expectations across all events — with each finishing ahead of their pre-race national ranking (note each boat has a separate ranking in this category).

  • The #7 Varsity 2x placed 5th, impressively overtaking #3 Harvard-Radcliffe.

  • The #7 Varsity 4+ surged in the final 750 meters to nab 5th, a strong effort against #5 Georgetown in their first matchup this season.

  • The #6 Varsity 8+, racing from lane 6, delivered one of the program’s strongest performances to date. They placed 4th, beating both #5 Georgetown and #4 Wisconsin, and crucially closed the gap on top-ranked Princeton by nearly one third compared to their earlier season dual.

Next up for the Cardinal is the IRA Championships, beginning May 31 on the Cooper River in New Jersey.
